When hiking with us, we ask that you Do Not:

  1. Leave the group

  2. Bring pets

  3. Smoke

  4. Drink from mountain streams

Carpooling is encouraged for all hikes and a Suggested Ride Donation (SRD) to offset the gas and other expenses of the driver is listed in the schedule for each hike. It is entirely up to the driver to choose whether or not to accept the donation.

The hike leader may cancel or change a hike due to unsafe weather conditions or other problems via e-mail before the start or if fewer than four people meet-up for a hike.  If you don’t have e-mail, call the leader if there is any doubt. The leader may also send last minute messages relating to the condition of the trail. Any person inappropriately equipped or physically unable may be advised not to attempt a hike.

Hikes marked Wilderness Areas are limited to 10 hikers. You must make advance reservations with the hike leader for these hikes.

To complete the Mountains-to-Sea Challenge, a hiker must hike the entire MTS Trail from Bear Pen Gap north to Mt. Mitchell–a distance of about 85 miles. This involves 16 hikes, which are flagged in the hike description book. Achievement patches will be awarded each time a hiker completes all 16 hikes.

High country volunteers maintain trails and pick-up highway litter in the national forest. Participation in these activities is encouraged.
